it all started with a sickening crackling sound and a sudden gush of cool air rushing into my right foot at lunch. i bent down and saw that only the front was split open. then while arranging for tomorrow's slew of interviews at my desk, the back part of it decided to give way. in the end, when i stepped out of the news room, the whole sole came apart.
i tried playing coy at first. but after a while, it became plain to me that i looked like an idiot trying to act limp and all. so i decided to do a mentos-fresh-moment thing - i held my detached sole in my hand and walked sole-less up the bus and home.
it was in all honesty a funny end to a relatively good day at work.
i reported to my sports editor today at 11am and was despatched to read about the reaction to the release of the international olympic council report on all the 5 bid cities for the 2012 summer games. the subsequent work meeting saw me assigned 2 stories to be published hopefully by week's end. to top it all off, i was offered a regular part-time paginator job.
it felt weird because i felt as if i got a lot to do, but yet i couldn't start on anything until i have got those interviews out of the way. so tomorrow i am meeting a couple of them to talk to them. hopefully i get my story angle up and running. it's so exciting.
it may be early days yet, but my sports editor seems like a person who trusts his interns to do their stories. he expects a lot from us, but yet he tells us to maintain our dignity and not the bottomline affect the way we conduct ourselves with other people. he seems like a father-figure to all at the sports desk. and i think he's christian. which makes things even easier. i hope.
all i need now is a work desk of my own.
