this sucker for sports here is hyperventilating here. at the rate the olympics is producing the upsets i am not too sure if my heart can take it.
first up, the men's 10m synchronised diving competition. into the last dive, one half of the chinese pair stopped twisting mid air and landed on his belly. that dive scored a big fat zero. they went from first to last right away. then the russians, second favourites lined up. they promptly hit the diving board on their way into the water. then the americans, when the gold was there for their taking, crashed into the water too. the greeks got the eventual gold medal. but it's more like the chinese who lost it more than the greeks who won it. yucks. nerves kill people.
next, the lin dan scalp by ronald susilo in the men's singles badminton first round. then susilo promptly gets slaughtered by thailand's lawyer-cum-badminton player, boonsak. the other chinese guy got booted early too. the slew of chinese upsets continues in the woman's badminton, with mia audina defeating world number one, gong ruina, in the semis -- even though she lost to yet another chinese in the final.
table tennis, another tradtional domain of the chinese, is another area, that they are seeing shocking exits. the woman singles, doubles and especially in the men's events. the rate i see them drop like flies, really startling because i never used to see the chinese capitulate in the manner they did.
i could go on and on. you get the drift. one thing i noticed is that the winner always won because he/she kept calm and approached the game point by point, instead of getting anxious over the end result. they focused on their task at hand, rather than become overwhelmed by the pressure.
i guess that is what i have to do now. this feeling of hopelessness. not going to let it overwhelm me. i have something extra. i just have to do my best and believe.
